Meaning 

1. A series of popular video games involving car theft and gang warfare. 

2. The act of stealing a motor vehicle or automobile, e.g., Motorcycle,  Car. 

Etymology 

"Grand" cause automobiles tend to have high value, and "Theft Auto" cause of the larceny of an automobile.
